IWPride Mission to Rescue Unwanted Unicorn in time for UKPride

AN UNWANTED unicorn will take ‘pride’ of place at this year’s Isle of Wight Pride event following a madcap mission to rescue it from a Birmingham shopping centre.

Team Pride’s Ellie Moore spotted a Facebook post saying clothing retailer Oasis was selling the unicorns, following their starring role in Christmas window displays at shops around the country.

She set about securing free tickets from Wightlink and a discount from Enterprise Rent-A-Car, jumped in a van with husband Darren Simmonds and headed for the Birmingham Bullring.

They snapped up the unicorn, one of only six in the country, for a bargain £100, taking photos along the way and documenting their adventures live on social media.

“It was really, really silly but great fun. Staff at the Bullring helped us load the unicorn into the van, and loads of people stopped us for a photo,” said Ellie.

“It just seemed to put a smile on everyone’s face, which was so nice.”

The unicorn will be painted with the Isle of Wight Pride logo at this year’s Isle of Wight and UK Pride event in Ryde on July 21, for people to take photos.

Only one question remains — what to name this fabulous creature? Team Pride are seeking suggestions, so feel free to get in touch via @IWPride on Facebook or Twitter.
